It's caused when the valve at the top of your stomach in the oesophagus doesn't close completely, it's usually, but not always in older people, when this valve has stretched somewhat, which in turn lets acid into an area that it shouldn't be in. One thing that does bring it on is if you eat too much close to bedtime. You'll find the acid burns more with a full stomach than with an emptier one. The over the counter medications ( both pills or liquid medicine ) for indigestion usually help mild to even moderate cases of reflux, but if things get worse & it happens a lot, then your doctor can prescribe a drug ( esomeprazole )to take daily that works very well. Avoid spicy food & sauces, fatty foods, alcohol & chocolate mainly. |
